It’s a Doggone Good Life!

September 7th, 2010

So does having a dog really enhance a person’s life?

A recent USA Today article is holding a poll asking doggie owners how their pets have impacted their lives. Feel free to take a look at this article online. The article also mentions a new study that reveals how dogs actually help decrease a child’s chances of becoming overweight by as much as 50%!

Experts say dogs who enjoy the outdoors promote healthy lifestyles and fitness in our lives. Our company mascot, Sox, for instance, loves the outdoors and helps bring amazing joy to our office in New York City. Sox even joins us on occasion during trade shows across the country. When he makes an appearance in the booth, tons of customers flock to our Arfdog station to say hello! He’s even landed a few sales for us as well!

Our friends at the North Shore Animal League constantly tell us about the many phone calls, letters of praise, and emails they receive from people who have recently adopted pets from the shelter. These dogs may have all found new homes, but little do they know, their owners may have found a new companion, or a new running buddy, or even a therapeutic healer.

Simply put, dogs rule!!!

Perhaps share some photos with us and give us your thoughts on how your dog has changed your life.

‘Doggie Blues’ Clues

August 31st, 2010

As the summer comes to an end, this could only mean one thing: BACK TO SCHOOL!!

For some doggie owners without kids, maybe a new job comes into the picture that causes a change in routine in your household.

Or maybe you decide to go on a short vacation and leave your dog home for a day or two.

Perhaps you’ve traveled throughout the summer camping with your dog… or you’ve hosted friends at your apartment for BBQs and they’d constantly show your dog affection upon their visit. And then all of a sudden, the visits stop! Not many people are around during the day to keep your dog company.

When dogs experience a change in routine or recognize a lack of attention, boredom and anxiety start to kick in. Perhaps you’ll notice your pet chewing up furniture or begin whining or howling.

So what are some ways to treat problems associated with your dog’s separation anxiety? Are there any behavioral patterns you should look for?

Arfdog found a couple of links from the Humane Society and the North Shore Animal League. They both offer up some pretty cool ideas and insight regarding how to treat “the doggie blues.”

And don’t forget… many shelters are starting to face overcrowding issues. There may be pets in your area being abandoned due to the recent changes in the economy.

So be sure to visit a local rescue league in your area and consider providing a loving home to a new furry family member.

We look forward to hearing more from you.

Doggie Distractions

August 24th, 2010

We all know that texting while driving a vehicle is a definite “no no!” Plus, it’s also just as dangerous to let go of the steering wheel with one hand and talk on your mobile phone.

But what if you decide to travel with your dog and while you’re driving, he or she starts to get excited in the back seat after spotting a really cute canine friend in the adjacent car. Maybe your dog starts to bark loudly. Perhaps your pet wants to lick your ear while you’re driving. Just looking away for a second or two can be dangerous.

Well, did you know that incidents involving driving with a pet in the car is the third worst driving distraction behind cell phone usage and texting? And if car crashes result from these incidents, then this could certainly spark new state laws in your area that would require drivers to secure animals in a vehicle.

A recent study from AAA finds that driving in the car with your pet causes just as much of a distraction as texting.

Organic Treats For Dogs

August 18th, 2010

A well-balanced diet is so important for your pet these days!

Just like us, dogs who eat nutritious foods daily combined with solid exercise, tend to be more resistant to disease and live longer, healthier lives.

Plus, you’ll also be saving money on vet bills, too, because your dog will need fewer medications than those pets who literally crave and eat anything and everything in their path.

Our doggie treats, for instance, contain natural, organic ingredients which aid in healthy digestion. Plus, our treats contain no wheat, corn, and soy — the top three causes of allergies in pets that should be avoided at all cost.

You may also want to take some time to review this North Shore Animal League Pet Food Recall List to make sure your dog is safe and does not consume something that could potentially be harmful to his or her health.

And don’t forget about senior dog diets! Here’s an article which gives some pretty cool tips of the kinds of nutritional needs to keep in mind when constructing a healthy, balanced diet for older dogs.

RESCUE CA[NINE]-1-1

August 10th, 2010

Back in February, Cynthia Fagen of the New York Post wrote an amazing article about three dogs from Afghanistan — their names: Rufus, Target and Sasha. Now, why are these dogs so special?

They became instant war heroes and saved the lives of U.S. troops near a remote military base in Afghanistan.

According to the article, the dogs started barking furiously after spotting a Taliban suicide bomber outside a building where 50 soldiers had been sleeping. Unfortunately, one of the dogs, Sasha, did not survive the attack.

You can read more details about their heroic rescue, including the emotional reunion with one of the soldiers.

As we continue to remember our fallen soldiers and those who are wounded in the war in Afghanistan, we should also take the time to remember furry friends like Sasha — many of whom are left to protect themselves in dangerous war-zone environments.

Thankfully, super dogs, Rufus and Target, now have new homes as you’ll read in the above article.

If you’d like to extend your help, be sure to check out this Facebook page of the Puppy Mission Rescue created by Anna Canaan, whose fiancé is a soldier currently stationed at that same Afghan outpost.

Also, we here at Arfdog cannot stress the importance of saving a dog’s life this summer — especially if you live in the New York CIty/New Jersey area.

This past Sunday, a truckload of Gulf Coast dogs just arrived at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey. Many of these pets have been left behind by owners affected by the Gulf oil spill from overwhelmed shelters in Louisiana.

Please click on this link where you’ll find out more details on how you can adopt a dog who just arrived in Jersey from the Deep South.

Be a Pet Leader!

August 3rd, 2010

As our summer series continues, we here at Arfdog decided to ask you a few questions about controlling your pet.

Are you the kind of owner that allows your dog to have his or her way? Or do you have a certain set of rules that he or she must follow?

And what happens when you’re walking your dog? Does he or she pull you around all over the place!?

Plus, did you know that your dog’s feeding habits might have an impact on discipline? Perhaps you feed your dog on a regular schedule.

Well, we would love to hear your thoughts about this particular blog post that deals with how to be more in control of your pet.

Our good friend, The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Milan, provided us with a few tips to help owners understand the value of exercise and discipline with your dog. For instance, did you ever think that prayer or meditation (or even mixed martial arts training) could help you become a better communicator and leader for your dog? Take a look at this link and let us know what you think.

Plus, be sure to check out Arfdog’s unique collection of leashes, many of which have matching collars, that could also help you master the art of walking more confidently with your dog.

Dealing With The Barking Lot

July 27th, 2010

We asked our company mascot, Sox, to give us a quick, playful pose for our blog — and THIS is the pose (shown above) that kept our team laughing for days! As you can see, he loves his new Arfdog rectangular doggie bed!

Although the summer heat can get us all hot and bothered at times, our Sox always helps us get through the day with his amazing sense of humor!

But, as you know, some dogs can get real cranky at times! Their behavior can go from cool and relaxed one minute to dominant and very possessive the next. Those intense moments always seem to lead a dog to barking loudly and repetitively!

Whether it’s an unfamiliar guest visiting your home or a particular dog breed (or cat) approaching, you can best believe your dog might get angry and start barking all over the place.

On CBS News’ “Early Show on Saturday Morning,” a professional doggie trainer stopped by the studio and provided viewers with tips on how to curb a dog’s barking.

The feature not only discussed techniques to help put an end to those annoying barks, but it also described the different breeds of dogs that tend to bark more than others.

Are there certain breeds of dogs that you tend to avoid with your dog? Perhaps you’ve experienced a certain toy or collar that’s prevented your dog from barking. How much does exercise play a role in curbing the barking problem? What do you think?

Click here for the CBS News link and share with us your comments regarding excessive dog barking.

Summer Adoption Options

July 20th, 2010

Hope you’re still enjoying your summer so far!

Our company mascot, Sox, went on vacation last week to Soaring Eagle Camp Ground in Pennsylvania and had an amazing time!

Well, he’s back to work here at Arfdog and wanted us to remind you about adopting a pet dog this summer.

Recently, there have been reports of a decrease in pet adoptions in animal shelters across the U.S.

According to animal rescue agencies, the reasons for the decrease include out-of-town college students to an increase in kittens and puppies at shelters due to breeding seasons of the summer months.

So if you or your loved one ever thought of adopting a pet (or considered adding a playmate with your dog), now is a great time to do so.

And if you’re in the New York area, visit the North Shore Animal League where Arfdog serves as one of its sponsors.

Just in case you’re not able to make a trip to Port Washington, North Shore has a spectacular mobile adoption program that takes shelter dogs on the road to the people.

Their RV-style mobile unit travels from coast to coast throughout the year hoping to connect hundreds of potential doggie owners with a homeless pet.

Click here for this year’s North Shore mobile rescue unit schedule and be sure to check out the date/location spot nearest you.

Remember, summer is the time of year where lots of dogs end up lost or without a home and many shelters start to experience fewer visitors.

This July and August, take some time to visit a local pet adoption shelter nearby and/or google a mobile pet rescue unit that may be traveling to your neighborhood soon.

Keeping Your Hot Dog Cool!

July 13th, 2010

The temperature outside is scorching hot these days!

And our canine sweethearts don’t wear shoes like we do! So, if his or her paws aren’t used to the hot pavement, then they could easily get burned!

We here at Arfdog thought it’d be a cool idea to provide you with some advice on how your dog should steer clear of any summertime heat hazards!

Our amazing friend, Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan, who’s happily sporting an awesome Arfdog Beach gift box in the photo, has some quick summer dog safety tips to keep in mind while you and your pet enjoy the great outdoors.

Click here to take a look at Cesar’s Summer Safety Tips for dogs.

And on another note, do you remember about a month ago we started chatting about what would make certain hotels pet-friendly?

Well, we’d certainly like to hear your thoughts on what would make local beaches and neighborhood parks pet-friendly?

If you’re located in the New York City Queens area or near Long Island, check out this really cool list of pet-friendly beaches and parks that you might want to consider visiting this summer.

So get out and have some fun this summer, and by all means, make sure you and your dog STAY COOL!

Arfdog’s Campy Canine

July 6th, 2010

Sox, our Arfdog mascot, is going on vacation this week to Soaring Eagle Camp Ground — a beautiful scenic area located along the upper Delaware River that runs through the Pocono/Catskill Mountains of Pennsylvania and New York.

As you can see in the picture, Sox loves swimming in the Delaware. Compared to other breeds, Sox is not a huge fan of the water. But once he puts on his life jacket (which is a MUST), you can tell that he instantly feels safe to wade in the water.

Life jackets not only keep your dog safe; but they also, according to doggy experts, help build confidence and endurance during the water adventure.

Some dogs just have an innate attraction to water — others just don’t want to be near it! Whether your dog loves to explore swimming or is very cautious, experts say you’ll be able to tell by his or her behavior.

Remember to never force or demand a fearful dog into deep water. Instead, show human leadership and trust by allowing your dog the choice to participate in going in the water. Experts suggest tossing a ball or a toy a couple of feet into the water to encourage him or her to swim.

Keep in mind, five minutes of swimming is equal to twenty minutes of running, so make sure your dog doesn’t show signs of fatigue.

Click here for some additional tips to keep in mind when you’re going hiking, camping, and swimming this summer with your dog.

So be extra careful during this hot and humid season and make sure you and your dog have lots of fun!!

Sox would love to hear from you!
